Is counseling for me?

-We think counseling can be beneficial for everyone. Studies show counseling can positively help with relationships, stress levels, physical pain, anxiety, depression, and much more. It can help in learning how to listen to yourself and create new, healthy patterns in your life. It offers a place to be heard, encouraged, and seek wellness. Finally, it is a place to invite another into your story and not go it alone. Here is a brief article on some of the benefits of therapy:

What can I expect in session?

-Sessions last about 50 minutes. Typically, sessions begin with a few moments of relaxing and getting into the present moment. Then, we often follow-up on the prior session and take it from there. At any point, clients are welcome to bring new topics, questions, or events into session. This time is for you.

You can talk about anything in session. Some topics/parts of our story can be difficult and scary. You get to decide when you feel safe and ready to talk about those things. You will never be forced to talk about things you are not ready to.

Is what I say in session confidential?

-Yes, everything you say in session is confidential other than a few exceptions.

Exceptions to confidentiality (From the APA):

1) Counselors may disclose private information without consent in order to protect the patient or the public from serious harm — if, for example, a client discusses plans to attempt suicide or harm another person.

2) Counselors are required to report ongoing domestic violence, abuse or neglect of children, the elderly or people with disabilities.

3) Counselors may release information if they receive a court order. That might happen if a person's mental health came into question during legal proceedings.

4) Counselors may release information as they discuss cases with their AAMFT or ACA approved supervisor in seeking licensure.

What are my first steps?

-Give us a call or send us an email. We will set up an intake session and direct you to complete some paperwork before you arrive for your first appointment. Once that is complete, you're all set!

What is the first session like?

Once you arrive, you can grab a spot in the waiting room and we will be out shortly to warmly welcome you. We will start by collecting your initial paperwork and payment for the session. You will be given some brief details about counseling, confidentiality, and other specifics. We will then spend most of the first session learning about you, your story, your family, what brings you in, etc. Throughout your time with us, we desire for you to feel safe, and comfortable.  We will go at your pace when you are ready.

How long does counseling last?

-Counseling lasts different amounts of time for different folks. Counseling is a process, and length of counseling will depend on your unique situation. We will do treatment plans and at any point we can discuss progress, goals, and where we are at along the way.  If you have any questions, I am happy to talk through those with you.
